NYPD renames Queens Police Academy after fallen detective Steven McDonald, image of braveness and forgiveness

QUEENS (WABC) — The NYPD formally renamed the Police Academy in Queens after a fallen detective who grew to become an emblem of braveness and forgiveness.

Detective Steven D. McDonald was shot and paralyzed from the neck down in 1986 by an adolescent who was stealing a motorcycle in Central Park.

Regardless of his accidents, McDonald went on to famously forgive {the teenager}.

He died on the age of 59 in 2017.

His son Conor and widow, Patti Ann McDonald, shared their story of affection, loss and dedication with NYPD recruits inside a constructing that now bears their household title.

In July of 1986, a 15-year-old theft suspect shot the then-29-year-old officer.
