Federal Choose Removes Rikers Island From Metropolis Management

A federal choose on Tuesday formally seized management of Rikers Island from New York Metropolis, ordering the appointment of an impartial supervisor to supervise the infamous jail advanced that has been stricken by studies of violence, ailing therapy, and inmate deaths.
In a 77-page ruling, U.S. District Choose Laura Taylor Swain mentioned the courtroom will appoint a “remediation supervisor” who will work alongside the commissioner of town’s Division of Correction to “assist remediation of the continuing violations of the constitutional rights of individuals in custody within the New York Metropolis jails.”

Since 2015, Rikers Island has been subjected to oversight by a court-appointed monitor following a settlement with town over alleged abuses within the jail advanced.
