Staten Island cat rescue: Residents and first responders assist save stray kitten caught in storm drain on Thomas Avenue

STATEN ISLAND, New York (WABC) — A “cat-astrophe” was averted on Wednesday after a kitten was rescued from a storm drain on Staten Island.

Neighbors on Thomas Avenue within the Richmond part heard the cat purring and tried their finest to rescue it.

“I am like what’s happening- what is the matter? And so they’re like there is a kitten in there. I used to be like no!” Lucille from Staten Island stated.

“He was scared, and he was nervous, however he was OK,” Lucille stated.

Lucille and Karen spent 4 hours within the baking solar with their neighbors making an attempt to rescue the frightened stray, calling each metropolis company they might consider.

“I advised them if I’ve to stay my leg within the sewer and break it for somebody to come back right here that is what I am gonna do. He stated effectively I do not recommend that and I stated you do not but when that is what it takes that is what is going on to occur as a result of I am not giving up on this cat.” Karen stated.

Shortly after NewsCopter7 arrived, and a name from the Eyewitness Information group, NYPD Particular Ops ESU officers responded, eliminated the storm drain cowl and helped rescue the kitten.

The NYPD posted a photograph of the officers who helped rescue the cat.

“I used to be born and raised on Staten Island and with the ability to assist out the neighbors and the island is a pleasant feeling, ESU Officer Steven Muirhead stated.

The cat seemed to be in good situation as first responders wrapped the kitten in a blanket or towel to dry up.

His new adoptive mother and father named him Thomas after the road he was discovered on.
