LONG ISLAND (WABC) — The impacts of the tough winter climate are being felt by animal rescue teams on Lengthy Island.

The bitter chilly and snow made it robust for teams to exit and get feral cats spayed or neutered.

Now, many are involved there can be a growth within the feral cat inhabitants that might have huge impacts for years to come back.

“We had a harsh winter; it was the primary huge storms we had in a few years, so it was laborious for rescuers to be trapping cats,” Humane Lengthy Island President John Di Leonardo mentioned.

Consultants warn that the intense winter climate hindered their potential to entice free-roaming cats.

The rescuers use meals as bait to find the animals, then entice, spay, neuter, and vaccinate them earlier than they’re launched or put up for adoption.

Di Leonardo says whereas it’s laborious to have an actual quantity, it’s estimated that there are about 500,000 feral cats in Nassau and Suffolk County.
